blog_fall_courses

Fall is in the air here in Crested Butte, but we are enjoying some hot weather for the next couple days.  We are lining up our schedule for fall and we have quite a few courses for the autumn months.  Our first course is a GPS/Navigation Course set for Sept 18th-20th.  This course will go over basic compass navigation as well as GPS use and plotting course on TOPO!  For a complete description, check our GPS/Navigation page. October brings our Rock Rescue Course and our Technical Mountain Biking Course. Our Rock Rescue Course is a great opportunity for any climber to increase their skill set and be prepared for an emergency situation. The Technical Mountain Biking Course is held in the ‘birthplace of mountain biking’ in the Gunnison/Crested Butte Valley. In this session, we’ll work on technical riding skills as well as basic backcountry bike maintainance. We are also offering two AMGA courses this fall; Single Pitch Instructor Course and the Rock Instructor Course. Both of these are crucial courses for people interested in AMGA certification or for industry professionals. Call our office for more information or to register for any of these courses. We will also be moving into prime ‘leaf peeping’ season in September/October and will continue to guide both hiking and biking trips as long as the weather holds. There is nothing like hiking or biking on a golden aspen leaf covered trail! Fall is a great time to be in Crested Butte!

Alpineering on the Spring Creek Needle

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Karen and Miles have been climbing with CBMG owner, Jayson, for almost ten years but due to a recently dislocated thumb JSJ couldn’t go out with them last week. They have climbed practically every route at Taylor Canyon and Karen has even climbed in the Black. I was left with the daunting question of where to take them climbing…

I elected to venture up Spring Creek and climb a prominent 5 pitch tower known locally as the Spring Creek Needle or as I like to call it The Aiguille de Spring Creek. Spring Creek is a lesser traveled climbing destination in Gunnison County and is heavily guarded by bushwacky approaches, exciting route finding and an alpine feel right off the road.
The adventure began with a tenuous traverse over the Spring Creek on a large dead tree and continued with an off-piste hike to the base of the climb.
Once we got to the route, the climbing was fabulous adventure climbing on beautiful granite. We opted for a route called Indestructible II 5.8. The route has a bit of everything on it from crack climbing to steep juggy face climbing and some exhilerating scrambling.

Here is photo of Karen on the arete that links the 3 and 4 pitches. Talk about exposure!

I took this photo of Miles and Karen at the top of the last pitch of 5th class climbing, a beautiful 5.7 splitter hand crack up a clean slab. From here we short-roped up to the very airy summit of the needle. Thanks for a great day out there exploring some of the lesser traveled routes in area!

It’s Not All Ropes & Technical Stuff….

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Sometimes we can get a little carried away with the BLOG postings for all the technical activities we do…but truth be told, alot of times these are not the norm, they just tend to be the longer trips we do, and thus they produce more photos.

Hiking above Green Lake

In fact we spend a good majority of our time in the summer months guiding non-technical activities such as: hiking, wildflower tours, backpacking, and even car camping trips…

Hiking the 403 Trail

AS guides, we love to do these trips as well as the challenging technical ones, as it allows us to relax a little bit and spend some time out in our beautifuul backyard chatting it up with folks, instead of being focused on all the ropes, knots, gear, and worrying about the weather.

Even our 4-legged friends have been known to come along and join us…..as ‘tail guides’…..
